Carbon Reduction Energy Efficiency Scheme
The Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) Energy Efficiency Scheme, is a new energy saving and emissions reduction scheme for the UK which introduces a performance league table and 'cap and trade' mechanism for Carbon Emissions for large organisations in both the public and the private sectors.
The scheme commences in April 2010 with a three year introductory phase, during which the Government will sell an uncapped quantity of allowances at a fixed price £12.00 per tonne. During subsequent phases of the scheme the Government will sell allowances through on online auction and the number of allowances available will be capped to enable the control over the amount of CO² emitted at which the cost of allowances is anticipated to increase to between £35.00 and £50.00 a tonne. The more CO² an organisation emits, the more allowances it has to purchase. So there is a direct incentive for organisations to reduce their emissions.
In addition an annual performance league table will be published by the Government ranking the position of each business in hierarchy of how much they have reduced their carbon emissions based on the first year of the scheme.
