Bowman Riley was instructed by Stirling Investments Ltd to design a masterplan for their existing green belt site at Cookridge Hall Golf Club, North Leeds.
The land is set in the grounds of a Grade II listed 18th century mansion house under separate ownership and in use as a health and fitness club.
Concerned about the long term viability of the golf club, Stirling Investments commissioned research to consider the future of golf at the club. The outcome of the research was that the club needed to attract higher volume users and encourage more young people to use the facilities.
Our role was to retain and rationalise the 18 hole course into a 9 hole course aimed at reaching a wider customer base. We also introduced a 9 hole footgolf course aimed at children and young people to stimulate an interest in the sport from a younger age as a crossover sport from football to golf. The remainder of the site was promoted to Leeds City Council for a residential development of up to 300 new houses, which would make a significant contribution towards meeting local housing land supply.
Due to the nature of the green belt site in the context of a listed building setting, we worked alongside a landscape architect to consider long distance views and topography. A landscape visual impact assessment was undertaken and this informed the masterplan for the site.
