The Dockyard Leisure Hub – Sunderland
AEW Europe
Sunderland
Bowman Riley was appointed to repurpose a redundant leisure centre and ice skating rink into The Dockyard, a new leisure destination working for The Bridges Shopping Centre in Sunderland.
This project is a joint venture between The Bridges and Sunderland City Council. The Council own a former leisure centre and derelict ice skating rink that is directly linked to the shopping centre. Bowman Riley was appointed to redevelop the space into a modern leisure hub and streetfood style food court.
The project aims to capitalise on the recent leisure and casual dining boom, whilst increasing the time spent on the premises. The introduction of a new dimension to the shopping centre will enhance the city’s evening entertainment offer.
Our role was to produce a concept design for the repurposing of the space creating a dockyard aesthetic for the casual dining area inspired by the nautical heritage of the city using shipping containers and pop-up food stalls.
The central food court will be enhanced by family-friendly leisure facilities, leased to various operators, including a trampoline park, ten-pin bowling alley, soft play area, climbing wall, go-karting and a cinema.
Bowman Riley has been working at The Bridges shopping centre for the past decade providing architectural and interior design services to respond to market trends and continuously improve this retail destination.
