West Park Hotel Courtyard Transformation – Harrogate

Seven years after designing the award-winning refurbishment of West Park Hotel, Bowman Riley was invited back to reimagine an underused courtyard into a vibrant, all-weather destination for alfresco dining and drinks.

Set on the edge of the Stray within Harrogate’s Conservation Area, the hotel wanted to build on the growing demand for outdoor hospitality by creating a space that felt every bit as stylish and welcoming as its interiors.

Our vision was to transform the enclosed courtyard into a contemporary garden retreat that seamlessly extends the hotel’s existing character. Natural timber trellising softens and conceals the surrounding walls, while layered planting, a striking living wall and bespoke heated seating create a warm, inviting atmosphere throughout the year.

Carefully considered lighting brings the courtyard to life after dark. Backlit mirrors reflect the planting to create the illusion of a larger space, while subtle uplighting highlights the topiary and trailing greenery, delivering a magical, twinkling garden ambience.

Fresh teal accents introduce colour and personality, complemented by a retractable roof that allows guests to enjoy the sunshine when the weather is favourable and provides protection when conditions change.

Flexibility was central to the design. A bespoke modular system, with each element mounted on concealed castors and weighted with sand, enables the layout to be reconfigured quickly for different events or operational needs without compromising the quality or aesthetic of the space.

The transformed courtyard officially opened in August 2021 and has since become one of Harrogate’s most sought-after destinations for both locals and visitors. The project has helped strengthen West Park Hotel’s reputation for exceptional hospitality, contributing to its recognition as a Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards winner and placing it among the world’s top 10% of hotels based on consistently outstanding guest reviews.
