Riverway Lodge Specialist Residential and Rehabilitation Facility – Stockton on Tees
Bowman Riley is providing architecture on Riverway Lodge in Stockton-on-Tees, a new specialist residential and rehabilitation facility for Voyage Care, supporting people with complex neurological conditions, including those recovering from acquired brain injury.
The project involves the transformation of Teesdale Lodge, a former early 1900s care home set within a 1.1-acre site. Previously accommodating 38 residents, the Riverway Lodge building has been comprehensively remodelled to deliver 25 self-contained studio apartments and ensuite bedrooms alongside dedicated treatment and therapy spaces designed to support personalised rehabilitation pathways.
The architectural strategy focuses on adapting the existing building to meet the specific clinical and operational needs of a specialist brain injury service. Internally, the layout has been reconfigured to create a calm, supportive environment, with improved accessibility, clear wayfinding and spaces designed to enhance independence while maintaining safety and care.
Externally, the existing building fabric is being carefully retained. Works include like-for-like window and door replacements to improve thermal performance and durability. Façade interventions have been sensitively managed to balance modern performance requirements with the building’s established appearance.
The surrounding grounds will be redesigned to provide therapeutic external spaces, including landscaped gardens that support recovery, relaxation and structured outdoor activity.
