Esso Dunstable – Bedfordshire
Bowman Riley was appointed by Esso and CBRE to provide architectural and principal designer services for the refurbishment of the Esso Dunstable Express petrol filling station on High Street North, Dunstable.
Delivered through an ongoing framework, the scheme involved upgrading critical fuel infrastructure while maintaining the operation of a busy retail site.
Working from project scoping through to completion, our team developed and coordinated a refurbishment programme comprising a refurbished forecourt canopy, new surfacing and upgraded fuel infrastructure. The scheme retained the site’s two existing 55,000-litre fuel tanks, which were refurbished and connected to new fuel piping and associated infrastructure, providing a cost-effective alternative to full tank removal and replacement.
Alongside architectural delivery, Bowman Riley fulfilled the principal designer role, ensuring compliance with petroleum regulations, APEA standards and CDM requirements throughout the project lifecycle.
A key challenge was maintaining safe public access to the adjoining Tesco store during construction. Close collaboration with contractor, Williams Southern enabled the site to remain operational while works progressed safely.
The completed scheme provides a refreshed, fully compliant forecourt with enhanced safety, improved operational performance and resilient infrastructure that supports the continued safe delivery of fuel.
