Beechcliffe School Calming Rooms & Circulation Spaces – Bradford

Bowman Riley supported Carleton Academy Trust to create a more nurturing and supportive environment for pupils at  Beechcliffe School in Thackley, Bradford, through a sensitive redecoration scheme.

Beechcliffe School is a specialised SEN setting for pupils aged 11-19 who have significant social, emotional, and mental health needs. Working on a pro bono basis, Bowman Riley redesigned the school’s calming rooms, sensory regulation spaces and surrounding circulation areas, transforming clinical-feeling spaces into warm, uplifting interiors that support emotional wellbeing and provide pupils with moments of calm during the school day.

The design uses colour, natural textures, organic forms and tactile finishes to create calming, psychologically supportive spaces. Bespoke horizon mural wallpapers add a sense of openness, while a gentle, nature-inspired palette extends through the corridors, creating a cohesive environment that supports emotional regulation, comfort and an inclusive learning experience.

The project also demonstrates the positive impact of social value through the pro bono contribution of Bowman Riley’s professional expertise. By using our design skills to support a local school, the project has delivered meaningful value beyond the physical transformation, directly benefiting pupils, staff and the wider school community.

Following the success of Phase 1, the project is now progressing into Phase 2, continuing the transformation of the school and extending the design principles throughout the wider environment. This ongoing work will further enhance pupil wellbeing and create a more cohesive, nurturing setting in which children can feel comfortable, supported and able to thrive.
