Bowman Riley provided architectural and interior design services for the award-winning transformation of a redundant agricultural barn into Craven Barn, a contemporary family home set within the scenic landscape of North Yorkshire.

Our clients sought to create a distinctive home that reflected their lifestyle while respecting the building’s agricultural heritage. Following a detailed assessment of the existing structure, we developed a design that retained the character of the original barn while introducing modern, open-plan living spaces and enhanced functionality.

To maximise the available space, we designed a dramatic double-height entrance and incorporated a full upper floor within the original single-storey footprint, creating a spacious two-storey home. Expansive glazing was introduced to capture panoramic countryside views, while reclaimed materials were reused where possible to retain a connection to the building’s history. Contemporary cladding provided a refined architectural finish that complements its rural setting.

Alongside the architectural transformation, we delivered a comprehensive interior design package. Beginning with concept designs and visualisations to establish the scale and character of the spaces, we developed detailed interior schemes, specifications and technical packages covering bespoke joinery, bathrooms, lighting design, feature headboards, floor finishes and decoration. Drawing inspiration from the barn’s industrial origins, we combined layered textures, contemporary detailing and a soft neutral palette to create a warm, cohesive and highly personalised family home.

The result is a carefully considered home that successfully blends heritage and modernity, with every element designed to reflect our clients’ aspirations and lifestyle.
