Greenwich Hotel – London
Bowman Riley was appointed to design a series of extensions to the DoubleTree by Hilton hotel in Greenwich, a prominent 1940s landmark building with a significant local history. Formerly a police headquarters, the building had stood vacant for many years before being restored and reopened as a hotel in 2012, bringing new life to the building.
Five years after opening, the Greenwich hotel had established itself as a successful four-star destination, operating at full occupancy. Bowman Riley was brought on board to support the hotel’s continued growth by designing new facilities to meet increased demand and ensure the long-term viability of the building.
The scheme included a contemporary glazed extension at the second-floor level above the main entrance, providing five additional guest bedrooms, alongside a new staff accommodation building to the rear, incorporating laundry facilities. These additions were carefully designed to complement the existing building while improving operational efficiency and staff wellbeing.
Bowman Riley also produced feasibility designs for a new glazed restaurant extension to replace the underused basement restaurant. Designed as a visible, welcoming destination, the proposed restaurant offers views across the surrounding leafy suburb, enhancing the hotel’s appeal throughout the day and evening.
Through thoughtful, commercially aware design, Bowman Riley has supported the continued success of the Greenwich hotel as a key local asset, helping reinvigorate a historic building into a thriving destination that contributes positively to the community, local economy, and urban environment.
