Chemistry Laboratory Refurbishments, University of Bradford

As part of an ongoing framework agreement with the University of Bradford, Bowman Riley was appointed to design and project manage two undergraduate chemistry teaching laboratory refurbishments within the University’s 1960s Richmond Building on the main city campus.

The laboratories were dated in appearance and no longer met the requirements of a modern teaching environment, particularly in terms of lighting, layout and overall student experience. The University identified the need to upgrade the spaces to enhance teaching delivery and create a more engaging and professional learning environment for both current and prospective students.

One laboratory underwent a full refurbishment, including the installation of new benching, flooring, suspended ceilings, energy-efficient lighting and integrated IT infrastructure. The second space was refreshed with new lighting and redecoration to bring it in line with the University’s contemporary teaching standards.

A key design intervention was the removal of a pinch point between the laboratories to improve sight lines and connectivity. We also introduced a bespoke teaching podium to support a more dynamic and flexible teaching style.

The result is a pair of revitalised laboratories that meet modern educational standards, support high-quality teaching and learning, and reflect the University’s commitment to continuously improving its estate.
