Northampton General Hospital

Bowman Riley designed a new modular building to house the main entrance and a series of welcome facilities for patients, staff and visitors at Northampton General Hospital.

The existing building is challenging to navigate; the reception is in the centre, and cafe/retail spaces are scattered around. The new building will feature a main entrance with a reception area, alongside welcome amenities that include coffee shops, retail units, a patient advice and liaison office, and washrooms. To future-proof the building, it was designed to accommodate an additional storey above the entrance.

Modular construction has ensured minimal time on site and disruption to the hospital’s operations whilst achieving factory-controlled quality. We have been working with Catfoss, a modular specialist, who is developing an ICU ward alongside the new entrance building in a style that matches our design. This coordination will create a cohesive overall aesthetic across the developments.

The project comprised extensive infrastructure works to improve access to the hospital. The work included improved lighting, landscaping, a raised pedestrianised crossing from the parking area, the diversion and relocation of the existing roadway and improvements to nearby car-parking areas to retain the overall car parking numbers.

“We are really excited to be building a new entrance to the hospital site to provide a better experience for our staff, patients and visitors. This new development will provide us with more space than our existing entrance and means that we can also offer a new range of retail outlets for people to enjoy.” – Stuart Finn, Director of Estates & Facilities, Northampton General Hospital
