Triumph at Ripon Civic Society Awards

Two of Bowman Riley’s most prestigious projects were recognised at the Ripon Civic Society design awards 2022 held on Thursday 7th April at the Workhouse Museum in Ripon.

The biennial 2020 Ripon Civic Society Awards were cancelled due to the pandemic, which had resulted in an unprecedented number of nominations – over 30 entries – for what had become the quadrennial 2022 Awards.

Grantley Hall Hotel and Wellness Retreat and Red House Retirement Village were both shortlisted amongst a range of developments including restoration work at St Peter and St Wilfrid church and the Fallen Angels project, which saw the repair of medieval misericords at Ripon Cathedral.

The comprehensive restoration of the Grade II* 17th century Grantley Hall into a hotel and wellness retreat won three of the Society’s principal trophies: The Price Flagon for Best Restored Building, The Hazzard Cup for Best New Building – for the Garden Pavilion and the Three Graces Spa – and The Helen Whitehead Salver for Best Project overall.  Senior Architect Anita Rebaudo and Architectural Technologist Ben Stone collected the awards on behalf of the project team.

The Japanese Garden at Grantley Hall was highly commended in the category of Environmental Improvement and the project overall was commended in the category of Best Craftsmanship.

The transformation of the Edwardian Red House building and surrounding grounds into a retirement community was Highly Commended in the category of Best Restored Building and the project was also Highly Commended in the category of Best New Building.  The development saw the refurbishment and extension of the original building to accommodate a comprehensive range of communal facilities and within the grounds, there are new build private residences comprising apartments, cottages and two-storey houses.
