Master of Environmental Design of Buildings
Architectural Technologist, Madelaine Bradley, has successfully completed a Master of Science in Environmental Design of Buildings — and with distinction! This impressive achievement marks a major milestone in her journey and reflects her dedication to advancing sustainable practices in the built environment.
Maddie’s course provided an in-depth understanding of the importance of sustainable building design in today’s world. Beginning with a broader context, the program explored critical topics such as climate change, ethics in construction, and historical approaches to sustainable architecture.
As the course progressed, Maddie developed the skills to critically evaluate key components that influence a building project’s sustainability. These included envelope design and thermal performance, careful selection of materials with consideration for embodied carbon, and the application of low-carbon strategies to minimise energy use in both new developments and retrofits.
The curriculum also delved into the dynamic aspects of building performance. From the fluctuations of daylight and air temperature throughout the day, to considerations of building usage and occupant behaviour, Maddie learned to balance design with practical needs and regulatory compliance, including standards such as Part O and Part L.
Using this knowledge, Maddie is now equipped to model and present data in a clear, client-friendly manner — helping clients understand the real-world impact of their design choices and ensuring their investments support meaningful environmental outcomes.
Reflecting on the experience, Maddie shared:
“It was definitely hard work — balancing deadlines and managing my time wasn’t always easy. But once the concepts started to click, it all became incredibly rewarding.”
Though she recognises that learning in this field is a lifelong pursuit, Maddie feels this course has provided a strong foundation for her next chapter — taking on a new role at Bowman Riley.
Congratulations, Maddie, on this outstanding accomplishment. We’re excited to see where your passion for sustainable design takes you next!
